Carson City Health and Human Services leads Nevada’s efforts to achieve public health accreditation by assessing the community’s health, implementing health intervention strategies and by increasing efforts to improve overall health department performance.


On May 25, 2016, Carson City Health & Human Services was awarded national accreditation from the Public Health Accreditation Board.

Accreditation Projects and Activities

2010
Participated as a Beta Test Site for Accreditation.

2012
June 2012 – Completed a Community Health Assessment (CHA).
June 2012 – Completed a Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP).

2013
January 2013 – Completed an organizational gap analysis.
March 2013 (updated December 2014) – Completed a 5-year Strategic Plan.
April 2013 – Submitted “Statement of Intent” to apply for accreditation to PHAB.
Received grant from the National Association of City and County Health Officials (NACCHO) to support Accreditation efforts.

2014
March 2014 – Submitted the health department’s Application to PHAB.
May 2014 – Two staff members attended PHAB’s web-based e-PHAB system training.
May 2014 – Completed and implemented the first CCHHS Quality Improvement Plan.
July 2014 – Implemented the Turning Point model for performance management.

2015
May 18, 2015 – Submitted documentation of conformity to the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB).

2016
February 2016- PHAB Site Visit
May 2016 – Achieved official notice from PHAB of achieving accreditation status.

Throughout the course of implementing the projects and activities mentioned above, CCHHS staff have noticed several positive outcomes to participating in health department accreditation preparation activities:

  • Improved internal communication of activity among divisions.
  • Strengthened performance management system.
  • Improved understanding and communication of quality improvement activities throughout the organization.
  • Improved project monitoring and outcome communication.
  • Increased pro-activity in project implementation.
